An historic record of close to 1,800 uninsured people were given medical treatment at the Reliant Center on September 26th, 2009. The event was held by the National Association of Free Health Clinics, (NAFC) and was co-sponsored by the cardiac surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of "The Dr. Oz Show". Nearly 700 volunteers including pediatricians, emergency room doctors, reconstructive plastic surgeons, and cardiologists donated their services during the one day event on the 168,000 square foot floor of the convention center. Over 120 exam rooms were set up to see patients. The area of Harris County, which includes Houston, holds the highest rate of uninsured people under the age of 65 in the entire United States.
